In the second
of an ongoing series leading up to the season, WNBA players go around the league
and call out the best in the business. From scorers to shooters to creative passers,
we get to the heart of the matter to answer some big questions. In this edition,
we look at some of the top shooters in the game, specifically the 3-point specialists, to find out
just what makes them so good. In short, it's all about knocking down shots.
Becky Hammon, New York Liberty
"Katie
Smith. I think her career speaks for itself. "
Lisa
Harrison, Phoenix Mercury
"Katie Smith, when she's on and I'm
not guarding her."
Betty
Lennox, Seattle Storm
"Katie Smith. She may not have had her best
season in 2005 for whatever reason, maybe due to injury or even adjusting to a
new team, but she is so consistent and you cannot leave her open. Like 90% of
the time, even if you are in her face, she is going to knock it down. She is the
most deadly. But there are a lot of great shooters out there. Katie Douglas is
a great shooter who makes it like every time she is open."
Kristen
Mann, Minnesota Lynx
"My old teammate, Katie Smith, is deadly.
I miss her."
Coco Miller,
Washington Mystics
"I had a really good three-point shooter on my team,
Laurie Koehn, a rookie last year out of Kansas State. She was the best 3-point
shooter I've ever seen. I she would barely ever miss."
Kelly
Miller, Phoenix Mercury
"Anna DeForge and Becky Hammon are two
that stand out for me."
Katie
Smith, Detroit Shock
"I'd say myself, of course, but there are other.
Nykesha Sales can knock it down, Katie Douglas was killing last year, Kara Lawson
has her spurts and even a newcomer like Laurie Koehn in Washington - that's her
m.o.. It's like automatic. There are probably one or two on each team."
Lindsay
Whalen, Connecticut Sun
"Well I think we have two on our team in Katie
Douglas and Nykeshia Sales. Those are two pretty good 3-point shooters right there.
I would also say Diana Taurasi and Anna DeForge. Then you have Laurie Koehn, Sue
Bird and the great Katie Smith.
